ABSIP Congratulates Professor Puleng Lenkabula

6 November 2020

The Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals (ABSIP) wishes to congratulate Professor Puleng LenkaBula on her appointment as the incoming Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Her appointment set as an unprecedented milestone for female academics in South Africa, as she is the first female in 148 years to be appointed as vice-chancellor of UNISA and the fifth women vice-chancellor in the country. It is furthermore, an indication that South African academia is committed to ensuring that black females are recognised in the education sector. This also affirms the institution’s support for race and gender transformation.

Professor LenkaBula currently serves as the Vice-Rector: Institutional Change, Student Affairs, and Community Engagement at the University of Free State, and previously served as Dean of Students at the University of the Witswatersrand. As a seasoned academic, she has held various other positions amongst others being a board member of the Council for Development of Social Sciences Research in Africa (CODESERIA).

ABSIP believes that Professor LenkaBula is a good fit for the position. Her professional career illustrates her passion and fervour for student development and she will contribute greatly to the decolonisation and innovation project in South African academia. It is also our view that she will pave way for more black female academics to lead institutions of higher learning in South Africa.

As an advocacy body committed to the race and gender transformation agenda, we aim to ensure that universities in South Africa reflect the demographics of South Africa. We pledge our support to her in her endeavour.
